Japan Fashion Week cancelled; Tokyo event axed due to safety concerns from earthquake damage

Japan Fashion Week has been canceled.
In the aftermath of the nightmarish earthquake and tsunami that has killed thousands and  crippled the country's basic services, Fashion Week organizers decided that the week-long events and runway shows simply could not go on.
"Due to the multiple concerns regarding current electricity shortages, unreliable transportation and general safety concerns, the Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo that was scheduled to take place this week and next week has been canceled," according to a report on the organizer's website.
In an effort to keep its designer's collections on the map during the crisis in Japan, the Fashion Week organization is working to make some collections available online to make up for the retail business lost from Fashion Week's cancellation, Crain's New York reported.
Fashion Week is just one of the major events in Tokyo that has been canceled amid the devastation.
World figure skating championships and the Tokyo International Anime Fair will not go on because of "extreme circumstances," Crain's reported.
